Our History: The Malley Farm Boys Home

Green Street NH is an organization of Malley Farm Boys Home alumni, staff, family, and friends. We are a continuation of Malley Farm Boys Home Inc, a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1977.

Our mission is to connect alumni, support each other, and work together to give back to the community.

1979–2015: The Malley Farm Boys Home

Malley Farm Boys Home

Originally named the Somersworth Group Home, we opened in 1979 to help boys age 12 to 18 from the greater Seacoast area and around the state of New Hampshire.

We were housed in an 1890 farmhouse set among the Malley Farm fields of Somersworth, New Hampshire, and in August of 2002, we officially changed our name to Malley Farm Boys Home. The home, along with a portion of city-owned land, was generously rented to the boys home by the City of Somersworth.

We offered both long-term residential care and an emergency service program to keep boys safe and offer them stability and care. Every boy who came to our program had a different set of circumstances and family situation. Their prior home life often included a combination of abuse, parental substance abuse, chronic unemployment, mental health issues, and neglect.

Over the course of 35 years, we provided a home for 700 boys with an average length of stay of 18 months. We sadly had to close the boys home in 2015 after successive years of state budget cuts and a lack of funding.

The Boys Home Mission

Our goal was to offer a stable family setting and support to these deserving young men. Our official mission was:

  • To restore safety, hope, trust, and self-worth in the lives of children in need
  • To provide the support and opportunities they need to realize their fullest potential as individuals and as valued members of society
  • To foster resiliency and respectful boundaries within families and our community

Many of our past residents would return to visit us years later to thank us, and it has always been truly wonderful to hear about their jobs and families. We still hear from alumni, and it's an honor to have been a part of every one of your lives. We hope that with the advent of Green Street, we can give you all a way to remember your younger years together.

2024: Green Street NH

While nearly 10 years have passed since the boys home closed, we have not forgotten the years spent at Malley Farm and the many incredible young people that we got to know during that time. Over the years, we have tried to stay available to alumni with a new location on Green Street in Somersworth.

In early 2024, we decided to formally change the name of the organization to Green Street to match our location and to honor our alumni (who are no longer boys). Green Street connects alumni, staff, family, and friends so we can share memories, support each other, and work together to give back to the community.

Some of our alumni are still young men, some are young fathers now, and others are old enough to be grandparents like us! We have also lost far too many, and they are not forgotten. Our goal is to let all of our alumni know that we’re still here for you, to offer support if you need it, or just to share memories.
